TRANSITORY, with Marginalia Written by Several Hands, 2018

edition of 10 hand-made books, each 9” x 7”

Marginalia: Pages from Transitory (2022), Digital colour prints

I photographed letters on the tombstones in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome and used them to spell out this meditation. The location of the grave where the letter is from and the identity of the person buried there are printed below each letter. The leather-bound books could also be used as a guide for a meandering walk through the cemetery.

Marginalia are annotations that are written in the margins of printed books. I circulated all ten of the TRANSITORY books among a network of people I know who live in Rome and others who have visited the Protestant Cemetery. I asked each person to represent their feelings or memories of being in the cemetery by writing, drawing or adding images to the books.
